10 Science Topics Every Grade 5 and 6 Student Should Know

Science exams and quizzes at Grade 5โ€“6 level tend to repeat the same topics year after year. Knowing these well does not just help with marks โ€” it builds a foundation that makes Grade 7 and 8 science much easier to understand.

Here are the ten topics that come up most often, explained simply.

1. Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is how plants make their own food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. The plant takes in COโ‚‚ through tiny pores in its leaves, absorbs water through its roots, and uses sunlight as the energy source. The output is glucose (food for the plant) and oxygen, which is released into the air.

Key fact: Plants take in COโ‚‚ and release Oโ‚‚. Humans do the opposite โ€” we breathe in Oโ‚‚ and breathe out COโ‚‚. Plants and humans need each other.

2. The water cycle

Water moves continuously between the Earth and the atmosphere. The sun heats water in oceans, rivers, and lakes โ€” the water evaporates and rises as water vapour. As it rises and cools, it condenses into clouds. When clouds collect enough water, it falls back as rain or snow. This cycle never stops.

Key fact: Evaporation โ†’ Condensation โ†’ Precipitation (rain/snow) โ†’ Collection โ†’ Evaporation again. These four words describe the full cycle.

3. Cells โ€” the building blocks of life

All living things are made of cells. A cell is the smallest unit of life โ€” it can grow, reproduce, and carry out basic functions. The most important parts of a cell to know at this level are: the cell membrane (outer covering), nucleus (control centre, contains DNA), and mitochondria (produces energy).

4. Gravity and forces

Gravity is the force that pulls everything toward the Earth. The larger an object's mass, the stronger its gravitational pull. This is why we stay on the ground and why things fall when dropped. Other important forces at this level: friction (slows objects down when surfaces touch) and buoyancy (why objects float in water).

Key fact: Gravity pulls everything downward. Friction resists motion. Buoyancy pushes objects upward in liquids. All three affect everyday objects.

5. States of matter

All matter exists in one of three main states: solid, liquid, or gas. The difference is how tightly the particles are packed. In solids they are tightly packed and fixed. In liquids they are close but can move. In gases they are spread out and move freely. Adding heat causes matter to change from solid โ†’ liquid โ†’ gas. Removing heat reverses this.

6. Food chains and ecosystems

A food chain shows who eats whom. It always starts with a producer (usually a plant), followed by herbivores (plant eaters), then carnivores (meat eaters). Energy passes from one level to the next, but some is lost at each step. This is why large predators like lions are always fewer in number than the grass they depend on at the bottom of the chain.

Key fact: Producers โ†’ Primary consumers โ†’ Secondary consumers โ†’ Tertiary consumers. Energy decreases at each level going up.

7. The digestive system

Digestion breaks food down into nutrients the body can use. The process starts in the mouth (chewing and saliva), continues in the stomach (acid breaks food down further), then the small intestine (nutrients are absorbed into the blood), and finally the large intestine (water is absorbed and waste is formed). Each organ has a specific job.

8. The solar system

Our solar system has eight planets orbiting the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune โ€” in that order from the sun. Key facts to know: Earth is the third planet, Jupiter is the largest, Saturn has visible rings, and Mars is called the Red Planet because of its iron-rich soil.

9. Acids and bases (basic introduction)

Substances can be acidic, basic (alkaline), or neutral. Acids taste sour (lemon juice, vinegar). Bases feel slippery (soap, baking soda). Neutral substances are neither โ€” water is the most common example. The pH scale measures this: 0โ€“6 is acidic, 7 is neutral, 8โ€“14 is basic. Litmus paper turns red in acid and blue in base.

10. Electricity basics

Electricity flows through conductors (materials that allow current to pass โ€” metals like copper). It does not flow through insulators (rubber, plastic, wood). A complete circuit is needed for electricity to flow โ€” if the circuit is broken, no current flows. Switches work by breaking and completing the circuit.

Key fact: Circuit must be complete for electricity to flow. Conductors allow flow. Insulators block it. Switches control the circuit.

How to study these topics effectively

Reading through topics once is not enough for most children. What works better is explaining the topic in your own words after reading it โ€” even if just saying it aloud to yourself. If you can explain photosynthesis in simple words without looking at notes, you understand it. If you cannot, read it again.

For each topic, also try to connect it to something real: gravity explains why a ball falls, the water cycle explains where rain comes from, food chains explain why lions are rare and grass is everywhere. Real connections make abstract facts much easier to remember.
